作为国际人才交流预备役的中学生和他们的外教故事

  Intercultural communication competence is one of the core abilities in the 21st century. Nowadays, an increasing number of students choose to study, work and live abroad. Talents communication have gone with the irreversible trend towards younger ages and popularization. Middle school students are the reserve forces for international talent communication, hence secondary education is the critical period to cultivate such competence.

  跨文化交际能力是与来自其他文化的成员进行得体有效交际所需具备的知识与动机,是 21 世纪公民的核心技能之一。今天,出国工作、学习、交换的学生越来越多,人才交流低龄化、大众化已成为不可逆转的趋势,中学生是国际交流人才的预备役,是跨文化交际中的弄潮儿,中学阶段也是培养跨文化交际能力的关键时期。

  China’s intercultural communication started late and suffered from a weak foundation. For a long time, English teaching syllabus in China has been test-oriented without emphasizing the practical use of cultural exchanges. The National Outline for the Medium- and Long-Term Talent Development Plan (2010-2020) promulgated in 2010 proposed that colleges and universities should cultivate a large number of global talents with international perspectives, proficiency in international rules, and ability to participate in international affairs. The 13th Five-Year Plan pointed out that the Sino-foreign joint cultivation of innovative talents should be firmly explored and practiced. Reports of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China emphasized that building a strong nation in education is fundamental for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. It can thus be seen that it is a matter of utmost urgency to cultivate intercultural communicative talents. In the practice of cultivation, the "Intercultural Communicative Competence Test" is an outstanding representative.

  我国的跨文化交际起步较晚,起点较低。长期以来,我国英语教学大纲多把英语教学定位在夯实语言基础方面,在文化交流的实际运用方面始终缺位。2010 年国家颁布的《国家中长期人才发展规划纲要(2010-2020 年)》提出,高校要培养大批具有国际视野、通晓国际规则、能够参与国际事务和国际竞争的国际化人才;十三五规划指出,要坚定探索并实施创新型人才及中外联合培养的模式;十九大报告强调,建设教育强国是中华民族伟大复兴的基础工程。由此可见,我国对跨文化交际人才的需求越来越迫切,针对跨文化交际能力的培养探索刻不容缓。在跨文化交际能力的培养实践中,“跨文化交际能力大赛”是一个典型代表。

  Intercultural Communicative Competence Test (hereinafter called “ICCT”) is based on English. It has received the support of State Administration of Foreign Affairs (SAFEA) and the recognition of more than 20 top universities in China. It has reached a strategic cooperation with U.S. News Global Education overseas to provide outstanding contestants with scholarship opportunities for world-renowned universities. ICCT examines students' ability to conduct an effective interpersonal interaction in an intercultural context from the perspective of intercultural basis, intercultural differences and intercultural adaptation, guiding students to maximize their potential.

  跨文化交际能力大赛是一个以英语语言为基础的大赛。在国内得到了中国国家外国专家局的支持以及 20 多所顶尖高校的认可;在海外与美国 U.S. News Global Education 达成战略合作,为获奖选手提供世界知名高校的推荐名额与奖学金机会。跨文化交际能力大赛从跨文化基本知识、跨文化差异和跨文化思维适应角度考察学生在多元文化和跨文化情境下有效开展人际互动的能力,引导学生最大限度地发挥自己潜力。

  For middle school students, the most direct and common way to engage in intercultural communication is communicating with their foreign teachers. Compared with Chinese counterparts, foreign teachers have an inherent advantage as native speakers; they are able to help students not only improve their language skills, but also experience authentic culture and foster mutual understanding. Connections between students and foreign teachers can also sow seeds of cultural understanding and mutual tolerance, eventually grow the flowers of friendships and common prosperity.

  对于中学生而言,同外教沟通交流是进行跨文化交际最直接普遍的方式。相对于中国教师,外教在英语教学方面具有先天优势——能帮助学生提升语言能力,感受地道的文化并增进对其他文化的了解。在中学生和外教的交往中更可以埋下文化理解和相互包容的种子,最终浇灌出共同繁荣的跨文化友谊之花。

  A series of fines pieces of writing sprang up from ICCT. These students described the details of getting along with their foreign teachers in either vivid or plain language. The following are excerpts from the fine pieces.

  跨文化交际能力大赛中涌现出一系列中学生佳作。他们用或生动或平实的语言,描述了与外教相处的种种细节。以下为优秀习作节选。

  Learning English Through Music

  《音乐英语》

  …In that period, I always took my guitar and she played the piano at the window. With the sun shone on our fingertips, we broke into English song. She corrected my wrong pronunciation one by one when I was singing. Sometimes, we talked in English about poetic lyrics in those songs. These enjoyable moments lasted a long time.

  ……那时,我常常抱着吉他弹唱,而她坐在窗台旁弹奏钢琴。阳光洒在指尖,我们和着音符唱着英语歌。她会一处一处地纠正我的英语发音错误,我们也会时不时地用英语歌词交流感想。这种惬意的生活持续了很久。

  In the following midterm English exam, I found a feeling never recorded, that is,I could almost understand the English dialogues in listening comprehension, and enabled to catch the core ideas of the essays in reading comprehension. As for the composition, a task which always had made me headache, it seemed that there was a magic power driving me to smoothly write it over at that day.

  在后来的期中考试中,我体会到了一种前所未有的感觉——我能够听懂英语听力对话,也能够迅速锁定阅读文章的关键。至于曾让我头疼的写作,那天也仿佛冥冥之中有一股神奇的力量推动着我顺利完成。

  Dancing to the Music

  《与外教“起舞”》

  Frank encouraged me when I got the steps wrong. Nevertheless, my muscles still felt painful since I was focusing on my body to make the right movements. Soon Frank suggested that we record our dance and watch it afterwards. Looking at the video, I realized how bad I danced. I sat down and fell into low spirits. Seeing that, Frank walked towards me, “I know you are eager to do your best, but you cannot devote your emotions to the dance if you are always so serious. Treat it not as a task, but as a self-fulfillment.”

  ……每当我跳错舞步的时候,弗兰克都会鼓励我。可尽管如此,我依旧会感到肌肉酸痛,毕竟我总是将所有精力都仅仅集中于肢体动作上。后来,弗兰克建议我们录下我们的舞蹈视频多作观看。在看视频的时候,我意识到自己跳得有多难看。我失望地坐在了地上。看到我这样,弗兰克走过来告诉我:“我知道你非常想做到zui.好。但是如果不够放松的话,你是没法将感情投入到舞蹈中的。别把舞蹈看作是一项任务,试着将它当作是自我实现的途径吧。”

  …For a person who’d never danced before like me, it was difficult to get everything right. Thanks to my teacher Frank’s guidance, I worked things outeventually.

  像我这样一个从来没接触过舞蹈的人,翩翩起舞实属不易。幸亏有外教弗兰克的指导,我终于成功了。

  My Foreign Teacher Who Loves Chinese Culture

  《热爱中国文化的外教》

  No one can change another, but one can be the motivation for another to change. In my life, Shirley is the person. As an English monitor, I have more opportunity to get close to her. She devotes all her enthusiasm to Chinese culture. I think it’s the reason of why she came here.

  每个人都是独立的个体,没有人能够改变另一个人,但是却可以成为另一个人改变的理由。在我的生活中,雪莉就是这样的人。作为英语学习委员,我比同学有更多的机会接近雪莉。虽然雪莉对汉语没有天赋,但是她将自己的所有热情倾注在中国文化上,我想这就是她来中国的原因吧。

  You can’t imagine how crazy about Chinese food and poem she is. As for Chinese food, she tried numerous types of flavor delicacies. Whenever she praises our traditional food such as rice cake, pride always flares up and fills with my heart. For Chinese poems, she every day recites Tang poetry with a tiny notebook on which notes are recorded in a dense pattern.

  你一定想不到她有多痴迷于中国美食和诗。雪莉尝过的中国美食数不胜数。每当她对年糕这样的中国传统美食赞不绝口时,一种自豪感就在我心里油然而生。至于中国诗词,雪莉每天都会把唐诗记在她已经写得密密麻麻的小笔记本上,闲暇时分就会拿出来背诵。

  I am deeply touched by what her entrepreneurship: Never give up when coming across your favorite. Always gazing upon her beaming face, I spoke softly, “Shirley, you are far more than a foreign teacher to me.”

  我为她的积极进取所深深打动。从她身上,我学会了一个道理:有一件所爱之事本就不易,既然有幸遇到,那就要珍惜不放弃!看着雪莉那副对中国文化着迷的的面孔,我轻喃:“雪莉,于我而言,你远不止是一位外教老师。”

  “Responsibility of the times does not rest with others, but with us youngsters... Strong youngsters will herald a strong nation.” The future of a nation depends on the keenest and bravest youngsters. Shouldering the heavy burden of the development of a nation is the responsibility of the citizens of a nation. "We are citizens of the world and were born for humanity." All nations are sharing weal and woe in one world. Supporting and promoting the development of all nations is the responsibility of the citizens of the world. Patriotism originates from China, but communication is a matter of the world. Whether it is for the nation or for the world, "telling Chinese stories well and spreading Chinese voice" is always the inexhaustible motivation and the right direction to struggle in the new epoch.

  “今日之责任,不在他人,而全在我少年……少年强则国强。”国家的未来要靠最敏锐、最勇敢的年轻一代,肩负起国家未来发展方向的重担,这是国家公民的责任。“我是世界公民,应为人类而生。”世界是一个生存整体,各国发展休戚与共,支持和推动世界共同发展,这是世界公民的责任。情怀源自中国,交流放眼世界。无论之于国家,抑或之于世界,“讲好中国故事,传播中国声音”始终是新时代奋斗的不竭动力与正确方向。

  Remain true to the original aspiration, and promising future is reserved for us; Keep mission firmly in our mind, and meritorious contribution is awaiting us. Forcultivating intercultural communicative competence of middle school students and strengthening international exchanges and cooperation, there is still a long way to go.

  不忘初心,前程有日月;牢记使命,勋绩看今朝。加强国际人才交流合作,对中学生跨文化交际能力的培养任重而道远。
