Dear Terry,
Delighted to learn that you will pay a visit to China and get together with your Chinese friend. I'm more than glad to offer you some suggestions on Chinese customs.
As an old saying goes, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do. "It couldn't be better if you show up a little earlier than the appointed time. What's more, a small gift to be sent to the host will fully extend your gratitude. I guess a tin of milk powder, a Maori handicraft or a woolen sweater will be highly appreciated.
Last but not least, in order to avoid embarrassment, you are supposed to know something about Chinese table manners. Firstly, unlike New Zealanders, we Chinese don't divide food into parts. Instead, we share it. Secondly, you'd better learn more about chopsticks. It is bad manners to stick the chopsticks into the food, to hit the bowl using chopsticks and to point at someone with chopsticks. Thirdly, it is because of hospitability that the host pick up food for you, so you should accept it happily.
I hope you will have a good time in China. If you need any further information, please don't hesitate to tell me.
Best,
Li Hua
